Protect your facade and paving with high-quality impregnating agent

A well-maintained façade and paving contribute to a durable and well-kept appearance of your home or business premises. But did you know that impregnation not only helps against pollution, but also contributes to energy savings? In this blog, we explain why impregnation is important, how you can test whether your wall needs impregnation, and which types of impregnating agents are most suitable.

What is an impregnating agent?

An impregnating agent is a protective liquid that penetrates deep into the pores of stone, concrete, wood or other materials. It forms an invisible, water-repellent layer without affecting the breathability of the material. This blocks moisture and prevents problems such as mould, frost damage and algae growth.

Want to know if your wall is suitable for impregnation? Do the simple test: throw some water on the stone. Does the water soak directly into the stone? Then impregnation is a good option. Does the water stay on it? Then it is not necessary.

How to impregnate a facade or paving?

Applying an impregnating agent is easy and can be done by both professionals and DIYers:

        1. Clean the surface: Remove dirt, mosses and algae for optimal adhesion.

        2. Let it dry thoroughly: Make sure the surface is completely dry before you start.

        3. Apply the impregnating agent: Use a low-pressure sprayer, roller or brush for even distribution.

        4. Let it harden: The effect starts immediately, but full protection is achieved after a few days. Furthermore, we recommend applying 2 coats.

Benefits of impregnation

Impregnating a facade offers numerous advantages:

  • Water- and dirt-resistant: Moisture and dirt have no chance to soak into the material.

  • Prevents mould and algae: Ideal for exterior walls prone to moisture problems.

  • Increases service life: Protects against weathering and abrasion.

  • Invisible protection: Preserves the original look of your facade or paving.

  • Energy-saving: A dry façade insulates better than a damp one, so you need to heat less and save on energy costs.

Durable impregnation

With rising energy costs and an increasing focus on sustainability, impregnation is not only good for your home, but also for the environment. By keeping moisture out, you prevent heat loss and use less energy to keep your home warm. This contributes to lower CO2 emissions and makes your home more energy efficient.

In addition, impregnation helps prevent pollution on your facade. Whether you live along a motorway with lots of smog or in a rural area with fertilisers in the air, impregnation makes dirt less likely to adhere. Your facade stays cleaner longer and requires less maintenance.

Impregnation is thus very durable!

Water-based or solvent-based: which do you choose?

When choosing an impregnating agent, there are two main options:

  • Water-based impregnating agent: Suitable for both new and existing porous substrates. Ideal for brick, concrete, sand-lime brick, plaster, natural stone and roof tiles.
Suppose a facade has been impregnated before, but you are not sure whether this was done with a water- or solvent-based variant, then we recommend working with a solvent base.
Suppose a facade has been impregnated before, but with a water-based variant, you can again use the super impregnating agent water-based.
  • Solvent-based impregnating agent: Specially developed for surfaces that have been previously impregnated. This is the best choice when you do not know which liquid a surface has been previously treated with.

How much impregnating agent do you need (per square metre)?

The amount of impregnating agent you need for the stone type strongly depends on a number of variables, such as the degree of erosion of the stone, the suction content of the stone type, and whether the stone has been impregnated before.

Our advice is to allow for about 0.5 to 1L per square metre.

How long does impregnation remain adherent?

There are plenty of impregnating agents available. The super impregnating agent is a professional variant and it lasts up to 10 years. Of course, this is highly dependent on weather conditions and the extent to which the façade is exposed to water and atmospheric pollution. But as a rule, the super impregnating agent lasts up to 10 years!
